Infant and child health are very poor in Haiti. The infant mortality rate is 124 per 1000 live births. A quarter of all registered deaths occurred among infants who were younger than one year old; half of all deaths occurred among children under five. Most of these deaths resulted from infectious diseases, especially diarrhea diseases. Global Caribbean Foundation believes it can make a difference in the lives of these kids by giving them the opportunity to access to better health care, give children a chance to attend school by providing them with basic materials, food and instill a sense of hope by teaching them to be responsible children and better adults tomorrow. Haiti already has the highest rate of maternal death in the region: 670 deaths per 100,000 live births, Global Caribbean Foundation wants to Provide a better health care, food, accessories (clothes) and medication for pregnancies women in needed and also for their new babies.

     Previous to this last earthquake, Haitian children was facing tough challenges. Haiti’s 3.8 million children under 18 years of age live in an environment of violence and extreme poverty.  They include thousands of children who live on the streets, do not attend school, work as domestic servants and are affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS; children who live in an environment where they are not protected from torture or being shot or killed; and even children who, during the recent years of political crisis, have been recruited to take part in adults' armed conflicts. The last earthquake has worsened the situation. Action is urgently needed and Global Caribbean Foundation wants to make a difference in two specific areas.
